What is XCOM?

XCOM is one of gaming's most celebrated tactical strategy franchises — a series that has challenged players to manage a secret paramilitary organization defending Earth from alien invasion. Blending turn-based tactical combat with base-building, resource management, and agonizing decision-making, XCOM invented a genre and has inspired countless games in its wake.

From the lo-fi, isometric brilliance of the 1994 original to the polished cinematic tension of the modern Firaxis era, XCOM has consistently asked the same question: can you save humanity when the odds are overwhelmingly against you?

Permadeath. Overwatch. Panic. Chrysalids. The Geoscape. Two words that strike fear into veterans: mission failed.

Core Mechanics

What separates XCOM from other strategy games is a tightly interlocked two-layer design — every decision on the battlefield ripples back to your base, and every resource choice shapes who goes into combat.

Tactical Layer

Turn-Based Combat

Each soldier acts on a two-action system — move and shoot, dash into cover, or hold position. Every choice carries life-or-death weight.

Tactical Layer

Overwatch & Flanking

Hold Overwatch to fire on moving enemies, or spend actions to flank them and strip cover bonuses. Positioning is everything.

Stakes

Permadeath

Soldiers die for good. You name them, watch them rank up, and grieve them. No reload removes the cost of a bad decision.

Strategic Layer

The Geoscape

Between missions, manage a global response network. Choose which countries to protect, intercept UFOs, and allocate satellites.

Strategic Layer

Research & Engineering

Autopsies and salvage unlock new weapons, armor, and abilities. Falling behind on tech means losing soldiers to threats you can't match.

Pressure

Global Panic

Ignore a region and panic rises. Ignore it long enough and that country withdraws funding. XCOM can fail without a single soldier dying.

Key Developers

👤

Julian Gollop

Creator — Original Series

Designer of UFO: Enemy Unknown at Mythos Games. Gollop's vision of a two-layer strategy game — tactical squad combat over a global strategic map — defined the genre. He later founded Snapshot Games and created Phoenix Point (2019) as a spiritual successor.

👤

Nick Gollop

Co-Creator — Original Series

Julian's brother and co-developer at Mythos Games. Worked alongside Julian on the programming and design of the original X-COM titles that established the franchise's foundations.

👤

Jake Solomon

Lead Designer — Modern Series

Lead designer at Firaxis Games for XCOM: Enemy Unknown (2012) and XCOM 2 (2016). Solomon championed the franchise's revival within 2K, kept the permadeath and strategic depth intact, and brought it to a new generation of players. A self-described lifelong XCOM fan.

👤

Pavonis Interactive

Long War Modders

Originally known as "Long War Studios," this team created the acclaimed Long War mods for Enemy Within and XCOM 2 — dramatically expanding both games. Their work was so respected that Firaxis commissioned them to create official DLC content for XCOM 2.

Key Milestones

1994

UFO: Enemy Unknown launches

Julian & Nick Gollop release the foundational classic through MicroProse, defining the tactical strategy genre.

1995

Terror from the Deep

The franchise dives underwater, introducing new terror — widely regarded as the most brutal entry in the series.

1997

Apocalypse arrives

A bold reinvention set in a dystopian mega-city, introducing real-time combat alongside the classic turn-based mode.

2012

Firaxis reimagines XCOM

Jake Solomon's XCOM: Enemy Unknown brings the franchise back to critical acclaim, introducing the series to a new generation.

2016

XCOM 2 flips the script

Humanity lost. Players now command a guerrilla resistance force, adding concealment mechanics and procedural maps.

2020

Chimera Squad — a new direction

A smaller, focused entry introducing breach mechanics and a diverse cast of human and alien operatives working together.

"The beauty of XCOM is that every death means something. You name your soldiers. You watch them grow. And when a Chrysalid takes them in the dark, you feel it." — The eternal experience of every XCOM commander
